THE BEGINNING AFTER THE END: Japan Seems To Love The Anime Despite American Fans Wanting The Show Canned

Despite a massive petition calling for The Beginning After the End TV anime to be cancelled streaming ratings in Japan say the series is actually popular.

Fans of The Beginning After the End aka TBATE (Saikyō no Ōsama, Futatabime no Jinsei wa Nani o Suru?) English webtoon from first-generation American Brandon Lee aka TurtleMe were incredibly hyped when plans for a TV anime adaptation from  Studio A-Cat were first announced in October 2024.

Longtime fans of the series, which has been around on Tapas since 2017, were excited at the possibility of the webcomic becoming the next Solo Leveling. However, fans have been incredibly dismayed with the level of animation from Studio A-Cat (I've Somehow Gotten Stronger When I Improved My Farm-Related Skills, She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man).

As such, there has been a fan petition, with over 50,000+ signatures, calling for the show's cancellation. The discussion around the petition has grown so loud that TurtleMe has addressed the complaints.

In a Reddit post, the author stated, "Coming from a time where I was sitting in the corner of a cafe, writing the novel by myself, for myself, it’s obvious just how large TBATE has gotten. I’m no longer just responsible for myself but for my team members, the partners associated with my work, as well as my readers..."

"...But as with anything you love–whether it’s your pet, your story, or even your child–when faced with challenges, you don’t wish for it to be gone and have a do-over. You support it through difficult times and push it up so that it can become something that you can cherish because of all of the trials and tribulations you’ve overcome together..."

"...As the author of TBATE–one who has spent 10 years writing almost 2 million words of this story–I hope you’ll believe me when I say that I want nothing but the best for this story. Whatever feelings you have for the anime, I am thankful for all of the people behind the scenes who have given me this opportunity, and I’m thankful for all of you for helping make this happen in the first place. You’ve stuck through TBATE at its highs and lows, and so I ask for your support now. Please continue being the rock that gave TBATE the time and chance to be where it is today..."

Nonetheless, TurtleMe's post calling for patience and support has not stopped the most ardent detractors from bashing the series on social media.

However, it looks as if it's only the American fanbase for TBATE that dislikes the anime adaptation, as ratings from Japan paint a different picture.

Over in Japan, TBATE ranks #6 on Netflix, #2 on U-Next, and #2 on D-Anime in the latest weekly ratings. It's also ranked #9 on Prime Video in Japan.

It seems Japanese otaku aren't caught up in the obsession over the anime's low-quality animation and are simply enjoying the story of another, well-told isekai.

By comparison, the TBATE anime is currently ranked #15 on Anitrendz- a popular Western online platform and community hub known for its weekly anime popularity polls and charts, which are fan-voted.

The first season of The Beginning After the End is currently slated for a 24-episode run, so it will be interesting to see if the animation improves over the course of the season.

Typically, anime production is an ongoing process that runs concurrently with the broadcast, and with production teams often working right up to the wire before an episode airs, it's not unheard of for a series to be delayed or paused in order for the production to meet certain quality standards.

That said, there's usually a small buffer of completed episodes at the start of a season, but the bulk of the production runs alongside the airing schedule. Perhaps it's time for Studio A-Cat to take a couple of weeks to course correct?

Do you agree or do you think American anime fans are too picky? Let us know in the comment section below.

In The Beginning After the End, following a mysterious death, King Grey is reborn as Arthur Leywin on the magical continent of Dicathen. Although he enters his second life as a baby, his previous wisdom remains. He begins to master magic and forge his own path as the years go by, seeking to correct the mistakes of his past life.

My fellow Americans, ya'll get WAY too precious over "animation quality". I've noticed this about other Western anime fans, they put way too much emphasis on the quality of animation rather than story. Animation quality can ADD to the quality of an animation but it should never detract from it. Story is first and foremost for how quality something is.

As long as it's not early One Piece quality or something, animation quality debates are severely overrated in my opinion.

@RealKAT0079 - I completely disagree with you. There are multiple mediums - novel, manga, and anime, and all of them have different strengths. Visuals are import to anime and even to some degree to manga. Saying that only story is import in an anime is plain stupid, you should then stick only to the novels, if nothing else really matters to you. Also, there is some degree to which the quality does not matter but if we get a powerpoint presentation instead of an animated video it feels a bit abssurd to call it anime at all.

It's almost as if the same people complaining about this show's animation quality, are entitled losers who expect everything to be animated by MAPA. I've seen people complain about Sakamoto Days for the same reason. Anyone with a shallow opinion like that should stick to watching mainstream content, since they throw a tantrum whenever a show doesn't have every frame that's flawless.

I actually love this anime exclamation mark mark while the animation probably could be a little bit better. It is not enough for me to not like it because the story is written so very well. The acting is superb. I just love the story and I think that Western culture cages everything based off of the graphics coming off of video games and feels like the only way they can enjoy an anime is if it’s living up to the standard isn’t they’re playing a video game All this to distract them from really using their mind and focusing on the story I love this story I don’t need extra ridiculous animation in order to be satisfied

The fans of TBATE are what makes TBATE what it is. Although, I don't get the petition, sure the animation sucked balls but it also sucks how they are skipping so much of the MC's development.

*Spoilers* Sylvia's death did not have as much impact on the viewer as it did in the manhwa and LN in my opinion. The story in the anime just glossed by too quick.
Also I don't think a ranking on a any streaming platform always shows a positive or negative thing. It's the actual feedbacks from fans that matters regardless of where they are from. It's just goes to show that they are passionate about something and that something being TBATE. Wished the production had better guidance by the director and given more funds though at the end of the day these are just my own opinion.

Cheers, from Aussie land.
